Join me in my efforts to support the Histiocytosis Association of America!
My name is Greg Yorba nand I am an adult with histiocytosis. My disease first started to manifest itself in 1996. I started to have problems with my ears, chronic otitis, and started to experience diabetes insipidus. It started to become much worse in 1999 when I experienced kidney failure, scleritis of my eyes, and infections in my body. I was treated for what was believed to be sarcoidosis at the time and later the kidney problem was diagnosed as retroperitoneal fibrosis. Nobody at that time ever thought this was histiocytosis. In 2002 I started to experience rashes in my groin. The rashes became open sores that would not heal. It was in 2002 that my problem was finally diagnosed as histiocytosis. That was when my histiocytosis treatments first started. At first interferon was tried but that only worked for a short time. Then vinblastine was tried but after a while the skin problems would return. As a last resort cladribine was used. This managed to calm down the skin problem. The cladribine worked the best. However since then I started to have sinus problems. Apparently the histiocytosis had also affected my sinuses. since the chemotherapy treatment has ended I have experienced various infections and maladies (nocardia, pneumocystis, and Guillain Barre syndrome). Recently in May, 2008 I was hospitalized with aplastic anemia. My white blood cell counts dropped to almost nothing. Histiocytosis is an insidious disease that can affect different parts of the body. The sad fact is although it is rare in adults (1 in 500,000) it is slightly more common in children. I think of all the hardships I have experienced and think that it must be horrible to be a child and have to bear this pain. Thank you for supporting the Histiocytosis Association of America. Your contribution to the Histiocytosis Association of America through the 8th Annual SoCal Histio Walk is greatly appreciated and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of the children, adults and families affected by histiocytosis.
