Supporting Owen and other children affected by Histiocytosis

My nephew Owen Tan Walpole was born on January 14, 2008. At only 3 months old, Owen was diagnosed in May 2008 with a very rare and potentially fatal disease known as Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). Owen lives in Gainesville, Florida and is currently receiving testing and treatment at the Children's Hospital in Vanderbilt, Tennessee. Owen's complete diagnosis and treatment program is still pending and we will update everyone when we have more information.

Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes which can attack the skin, bones, lungs, liver, spleen, gums, ears, eyes and/or the central nervous system. In some ways, Histiocytosis is similar to cancer and has historically been treated by oncologists with chemotherapy and/or radiation.

The vast majority of people diagnosed with Histiocytosis are children under the age of ten, but it is also found in adults of all ages. This disease affects roughly 5 in 1,000,000 children born each year in the United States. Histiocytosis is so rare that there is very little research into its cause and treatment and is often referred to as an "orphan disease", meaning it strikes too few people to generate any government-supported research.

It is only through private fundraising and the generosity of people such as you that research efforts are starting to be made to establish better treatments, find a cure, and ultimately prevent this disease.

Thank you for your support!!!
